about

What inspired the song?

"Obviously a major influence was the history of “the breakup song” in country music, as well as the murder ballad. Which this is not, but all the same. I think the reason I wrote the song was because of a typical terrible day I was having at work that got me in this mood."

Who produced it? What was the recording experience like?

"The House Is a Disaster is written and arranged by Bailey Allen Baker and produced/engineered by Shadrach Tuck at Mishap Recordings.

This was the longest we spent recording takes on a specific part for sure. It wasn’t necessarily a grueling process, but I was getting take fatigue often with this one. What Shad was able to do with Frankie Tillo (Electric Guitarist on the song) after I had to come back up to North Idaho was amazing though. After that ornamentation everything fell into place and it became one of my favorite songs on the record."

What do you want people to take away from the song?

"Man, whatever. Just don’t feel bad for the narrator, he probably deserved it."

Was there a particular mood you were trying to capture? A story you were trying to tell?

"I was really trying to make a song that sounded as if the narrator was quite literally at the end of his rope. I wanted to make him seem completely broken. I wanted it to sound like a bookend."

Anything else noteworthy?

"I wrote all of the lyrics during a smoke break at work in about 7 minutes."

lyrics

I'll stay besides the window
And make notches for the days your gone
And I’ll leave the front door unlocked
In case you’re coming home
I’m blowing all my money
Wasting all my time
Waiting for you to come back
And jump into my arms

Cause I’ve had so many long forgotten nights
Since you went running,
Since you’ve been lost
And I don’t how much longer I can do this
But until I hear that your dead or happy
I’ll keep putting myself through this

Down on Prescott I drank a fifth of Smithwick's
Then I passed out in the street holding pictures of you and me
I keep the bottle close, and the stoker closer
I haven’t been sweeping the ashes
The house is a disaster

I Called Mary up and asked where you went
She heard my voice and asked my name then she simply said away
I don’t know how much longer I can do this
I’m grasping at straws, every day is a further fall

Cause I’ve had so many long forgotten nights
Since you went running,
Since you’ve been lost
Why’d you have to leave the day I got paid
And now the works all gone away, all I do is sit home and say...
